While you might not be a shopaholic, who can resist an amazing Black Friday sale? However, some don’t wait until the day after Thanksgiving to partake in awesome deals. Some retailers open their doors on Thanksgiving Day while others announce in advance to attract bargain hunters even earlier.
The History Behind Black Friday
Did you know that the origin of Black Friday goes all the way back to September 24, 1869, when Jim Fisk and Jay Gould tried and failed to corner the gold market. Stocks plummeted as a result.
While a bit grim, the 1869 event eventually prompted retail stores to drop their prices around the holidays.
Since 1924, the day after Thanksgiving and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade unofficially marked the beginning of the holiday shopping season. By the 1960s, the term “Black Friday” was coined by retailers as their accountants would mark financial results in red ink to indicate a loss and in black ink to indicate a profit. Therefore, the “Black” in “Black Friday” refers to increased profits and sales due to holiday shopping.
I don’t know about you, but Christmas season is one of my favorite times of the year. Everyone is in a relatively good mood, and you are looking to start shopping for the loved ones on your “nice” list. However, most people find themselves in a credit card nightmare by the time New Year’s Day rolls around.
Once the credit card bill comes in the mail, the holiday buzz wears off quickly. On average, most Americans will rack up at least $1,000 in credit card debt during the holidays alone. The average credit card debt spending seems to go up each year.
According to financial research, the average credit card spending in 2015 was $986. Average debt increased the following year to $1,003, and the figure will surely climb.
Black Friday & Ways To Shop Smart
Here are some tips to keep your spending under control:
- Set a holiday spending budget and stick to it.
- After you’ve created a budget, set cash aside in a separate bank account. Alternatively, track how much money you are to use from your checking or savings account.
- Whatever you do, try not to put it all on your credit card. If you do have credit card debt, try paying it off first before adding to an already hefty bill.
- If you can, be creative with your gifts. If you don’t have the capital to purchase it, don’t buy it.
- Try making your gifts. Home-made, inexpensive gifts are often more sentimental and add a personal touch.
- Quality time is more valuable than monetary gifts. Try spending time with those you love rather than trying to impress them with expensive gifts.
Narrow Your Search: Look Out For Sales From Your Favorite Stores
It is overwhelming to get hit with a ton of sales all at once. You can only be in one place at a time, and most of us don’t have an infinite amount of cash to spend. If you are going to spend money, as stated above, get yourself on a budget. When you’re shopping, and you want to use cash or your debit card, keep your credit cards at home. Finally, whatever you do, don’t get tempted to sign up for more credit cards to obtain additional savings, a favorite trick of retailers.
Keep a list of the stores you wish to shop at and stick to items on your list. Holiday shopping for shopaholics is like going to a grocery store hungry. You never want to go into a grocery store hungry, or you end up overspending. Similarly, without a strict budget and a list, it’s harder to stay disciplined. If you are looking for ideas, do research in advance prior to hoping in your car and fighting traffic in both the parking lot and at the cash register.
